not for ambition or bread

I spent a long weekend in Devon selling work at the Contemporary Craft Fair and camping in the rain. Actually, quite enjoyable: but it reminded me that I never really wanted to work in retail. Engineering, production, logistics, consulting, finance, marketing, even sales support (for application development and knowledge management software) – Yes. Retail – No.  So this little plaque is my current talisman: it reads “not for ambition or bread”.

porcelain plaque with inscribed line of poem

It’s from Dylan Thomas’ poem “In my craft or sullen art”. I’m really working for “the common wages/ of their most secret heart”.
